During my younger years, while I was in University, my alcoholic drink of choice was vodka and my favourite mixer was cranberry juice. I remember every time I went overseas I would use the opportunity to purchase Absolut Vodka duty free because I liked the look of the bottle! Then Absolut started to bring out different flavours of Absolut Vodka with pretty coloured writing on the bottle and I wanted to buy them all!
When I received an invitation to attend the Absolut Elyx launch at Albert St Food & Wine, I couldn’t say no, especially when I found out that Absolut Elyx is Absolut’s handcrafted super premium vodka. Absolut Elyx is a small-batch vodka, produced according to craft techniques, in an authentic 1929 copper rectification still. The copper gives the vodka its silky and velvety texture. Guests were treated to a night of beautiful food and vodka matching and we even got the chance to make our own vodka cocktails.

The classy Absolut Elyx bottles with copper lids, sitting on top of a massive block of ice. The block was carved into large, singular cubes of ice for Absolut Elyx on the rocks

Cocktail making utensils on every table so we could make our own cocktails

Empty cocktail glasses waiting to be filled

We started with a blind tasting of three different types of vodkas straight, and we had to work out which one we liked best before the one was that was Absolut Elyx was revealed

Absolut on the rocks with scallop ceviche, crab and apple remoulade, Avruga caviar
The scallop was so delicate and fresh. The taste of the Absolut Elyx was a lot smoother with the addition of ice in comparison to just drinking it straight.

Absolut Elyx martini with Melanzane, Bocquorones, Padron peppers
Melanzane is eggplant and bocquorones is anchovies. It was also served with a passata and olive tapenade. We made our own martini with Absolut Elyx and vermouth.

Absolut Elyx sour with John Dory, Artichokes escabeche, saffron
The fish was also served with a cauliflower puree and bacon bits. The drink with this course was an Absolut Elyx sour, which we made using Absolut Elyx, pinot cherry, sugar syrup, lemon juice and egg white. The cocktail was shaken without ice.

Absolut Elyx 1929 with Pistachio, dark chocolate sorbet, dried sour cherries
The slightly bitter dark chocolate sorbet went well with the pistachio cake and the cherry puree and dried cherries were a nice addition. The last cocktail we made was the Absolut Elyx 1929, with Absolut Elyx, sweet red vermouth and cherry brandy.

I loved the lit Absolut Elyx ice buckets

I’ve always been a fan of Absolut Vodka ads and it looks like they also throw mean dinner events! Like Winston, I like the idea of a vodka and food pairing dinner and the food presented here looks delicious.
So… did you pick the right vodka??

Great pics. I gave up booze entirely over a year ago, but I do miss martinis. Nothing else, really, but definitely those! GG
Oh gee… I hope I am not too old to be still having the young vodka days… To bad if I am, I think my cocktail making has just improved with age
